Its technology bears little relationship to genuine space travel, but that hardly seems the point. More than six decades before astronauts reached the Moon, Méliès had already shown audiences what it felt like to imagine the journey.

Why A Trip to the Moon Is a Sci-Fi Icon
Calling A Trip to the Moon one of the first science-fiction films can make it sound like a primitive draft of something cinema would eventually learn to do properly. Watching it reveals almost the opposite. Georges Méliès already understood that speculative cinema could combine technology, adventure, satire, monsters and visual spectacle.
The film arrived when projected moving pictures were still a new attraction. Many early productions recorded ordinary events, staged brief comic incidents or recreated scenes from public life. Méliès saw that the camera could become an instrument of illusion. Rather than merely showing audiences what existed, he used it to show them what could not exist anywhere else.
His background as a stage magician was essential. Painted scenery, trapdoors, smoke effects, theatrical machinery and carefully choreographed performers gave him the raw materials, while editing allowed transformations that could not be achieved continuously on stage. Characters disappear in bursts of smoke, celestial bodies become performers and Selenites explode when struck.
The result is unmistakably theatrical. The camera normally observes each setting from a fixed position resembling a seat in an auditorium. Yet within that frame, Méliès creates a succession of elaborate tableaux packed with movement and invention.
Its most famous image is the capsule embedded in the eye of the anthropomorphic Moon. The shot lasts only moments, but it has become one of cinema’s most enduring images. It reduces the entire concept of lunar exploration to a single absurd, instantly understood visual: humanity has reached another world and made a dreadful first impression.
The film’s science is deliberately fanciful. The astronomers wear robes rather than spacesuits, breathe comfortably on the lunar surface and return to Earth by pushing their capsule from the Moon’s edge. Méliès was not predicting the engineering of spaceflight. He was visualising the thrill of leaving Earth.
That imaginative freedom helped establish a basic principle of screen science fiction. Scientific plausibility can support a story, but cinema’s unique power lies in making an impossible idea visible. Every later spacecraft, alien landscape and extraterrestrial civilisation inherits something from Méliès’ decision to point his camera towards the Moon.

Spoiler Mode
Professor Barbenfouillis presides over a meeting of the Astronomers’ Club and proposes an expedition to the Moon. After a heated argument, five colleagues agree to accompany him.
The astronomers visit a workshop where attendants construct a hollow capsule shaped like an artillery shell. The finished craft is moved to the top of a building and inserted into an enormous cannon. The travellers climb inside, the cannon is aimed towards the sky and a group of attendants fires it.
The Moon grows larger as the capsule approaches. Its surface transforms into a human face just before the projectile strikes it directly in the eye. The capsule subsequently lands on the lunar surface, allowing the astronomers to emerge without breathing equipment or any apparent concern about pressure.
They watch Earth rise over the horizon and witness a group of celestial figures appearing in the sky. Exhausted by the journey, the travellers lie down to sleep. A snowstorm wakes them and forces them to seek shelter inside a crater.
Beneath the surface, they enter a cavern filled with enormous mushrooms. Barbenfouillis opens his umbrella, which takes root and transforms into another mushroom.
A Selenite appears and attacks the group. Barbenfouillis strikes it with his umbrella, causing it to vanish in a burst of smoke. More Selenites arrive, and although the astronomers destroy several, they are eventually captured and taken before the lunar king.
Barbenfouillis breaks free, lifts the king from his throne and throws him to the ground, where he also disappears. The astronomers flee towards their capsule while pursued by an army of Selenites.
Five travellers climb inside. Barbenfouillis remains outside and uses a rope to pull the capsule over the edge of the Moon. A Selenite reaches the craft before it falls and clings to its exterior.
The capsule plummets through space and lands in the ocean. It sinks beneath the water before floating back to the surface, where a ship tows it to shore.
The astronomers receive a triumphant public celebration. They display the captive Selenite, who dances for the crowd, and unveil a statue commemorating their achievement.
The ending reflects both the exuberance and the uncomfortable assumptions of its era. The explorers are celebrated after invading another world, attacking its inhabitants and returning with a prisoner. Yet the exaggerated ceremony also supports a satirical reading: these supposedly distinguished scientists have completed their expedition through improvisation, aggression and a complete absence of planning.

Can an imaginary version of the future influence reality even when none of its science is remotely accurate?
A Trip to the Moon did not anticipate rockets, spacesuits or the physical conditions astronauts would encounter. Its spacecraft is an artillery shell, its scientists breathe normally on the Moon and gravity operates according to whatever the scene requires.
What it understood was the imaginative significance of space travel. Leaving Earth would allow humanity to see familiar celestial objects as places, encounter environments beyond ordinary experience and confront the possibility that life existed elsewhere.
Méliès gave those ideas a visual language before technology could make them real. The Moon grows closer, the capsule crosses the distance and human beings step onto another world. Audiences could see the journey rather than merely read about it.
Scientific accuracy was not the film’s lasting contribution. It established that cinema could give speculative ideas shape, movement and emotional immediacy. By making an impossible voyage visible, Méliès helped later generations imagine that it might eventually become possible.
