🕯️ Why Constantine is a Sci-Fi-Adjacent Icon
Constantine is gothic, gritty, and full of theology-flavored tech — like a cross between Blade, The Matrix, and a very cursed Catholic school field trip. It’s based on the Hellblazer comics, but the film version leans more into supernatural detective noir with a healthy dose of existential dread.
Keanu plays it cool and broken, Rachel Weisz anchors the story with heart, and Peter Stormare delivers the most unhinged, unsettling Lucifer ever committed to screen. Oh, and Tilda Swinton shows up as a genderless, rogue angel in a dirty trench coat. Iconic.
🔍 Deep Dive Highlights
- John Constantine: Smokes like a chimney, dies like a martyr, banters like a noir detective with chronic trauma.
- Angela Dodson: A cop investigating her twin sister’s suicide, and a gateway to hell-adjacent revelations.
- Gabriel: The androgynous angel who believes humanity doesn’t deserve salvation. Not a chill take.
- Hell: A scorched mirror version of LA full of rust, ash, and regret.
- Weapons & Relics: Holy shotguns, crucifix knuckles, blessed water grenades — Constantine has gear.

Spoilers ahead — but honestly, you saw this in a dream already.
John Constantine is a tormented occult detective with the ability to see the hidden world of angels and demons. He’s terminally ill, damned by a past suicide attempt, and trying to earn his way into heaven by sending hellspawn back where they came from.
When Angela Dodson, a detective, comes to him about her twin sister’s mysterious death, Constantine gets dragged into a demonic conspiracy involving rogue angels, corrupted half-breeds, and a prophecy about the Spear of Destiny and Mammon, the son of Lucifer.
Turns out Gabriel, a bitter archangel, wants to unleash hell on Earth to “teach humanity the value of suffering.” Charming. Constantine sacrifices himself to stop the plan — but earns redemption in the process. When Lucifer arrives to collect his soul, he’s so annoyed by John’s selflessness that he heals him out of spite. Classic petty devil move.
The film ends with John alive, free, and — for once — choosing gum instead of a cigarette.
🧠 Constantine Core Question
Can someone damned by the past ever earn redemption — even if they have to trick the devil to get it?
