🧬 Why Mickey 17 is a Sci-Fi Icon (in the making)
Mickey 17 is based on Edward Ashton’s novel Mickey7, and Bong Joon Ho brings his distinct flavor of class commentary, genre blending, and existential chaos to the big screen. The result? A visually rich, emotionally twisted ride through identity, mortality, and how society values human life — especially expendable life.
Plus: Robert Pattinson being cloned and killed repeatedly while delivering dry wit? It’s cinema.
🔍 Deep Dive Highlights
- Mickey Barnes: An “Expendable” — a human designated to die so others don’t have to.
- The Colony on Niflheim: Icy, unwelcoming, and run like a broken space corporation.
- Memory Transfer Tech: Each death revives a new Mickey, carrying echoes of the last.
- Existential Spiral: What happens when your own replacement shows up… before you die?
- Bong’s Direction: Equal parts funny, bleak, and beautifully weird.

Spoilers ahead — unless you’ve died and rebooted already.
Mickey is part of a space colonization team on Niflheim, a hostile ice planet where survival is a group effort — and pain is outsourced to the Expendable. That’s Mickey’s job. If something dangerous needs doing? Mickey dies doing it.
But each time he dies, a new clone wakes up — Mickey 18, Mickey 19, and so on — with most of the previous version’s memories. It’s disturbing, but normalized in this brutal future. Mickey shrugs and goes along with it… until one day, a cloning glitch leaves two Mickeys alive at once.
That’s when things get complicated.
As Mickey 17 (the previous) and Mickey 18 (the newest) both try to exist in the same space, questions arise: Who’s the “real” one? What does identity mean if you’re disposable? And what happens when the colony’s leadership — especially the shady commander played by Toni Collette — decides one of you needs to go?
Meanwhile, strange things are happening underground. There may be intelligent life native to Niflheim, and Mickey’s constant resurrections may have bigger implications than anyone thought.
The film ends with clones rebelling, truths unraveling, and Mickey deciding he’s more than the job he was grown for. The final shot is both hilarious and haunting — pure Bong Joon Ho.
